Bristol Churches Shelter

life event collections

Bristol Churches Shelter (BCS) operates a dedicated 9-bed Guest House in Bristol from November to March each year. During these five winter months, we offer round-the-clock accommodation to individuals who would otherwise be sleeping rough. Guests are referred to us by St Mungo’s and the Bristol Hospitality Network. While staying with us, they receive support from BCS staff, the referring agencies, Bristol City Council (BCC), and other partner organisations to help them transition into more stable housing and access additional services as needed. We’re also really excited to be working with Hope into Action: Bristol to offer long-term accommodation.

The help they receive includes:-

– 24-7 access to the shelter

– Single occupancy room

– 3 meals a day

– 1-2-1 Support to find accommodation

– Other support as and when needed

– Washing facilities

BCS is a partnership of churches, governed by inHope. Funding is provided by Bristol City Council and donations are required to make up the shortfall. Donations are provided by individuals and Churches in Bristol.

Each winter it is a true blessing to witness our guests moving forward in their lives and begin to hope again. Many arrive withdrawn and quiet, carrying the weight of their experiences. But over time, we see remarkable changes—smiles become more frequent, and a sense of peace starts to take root. This project provides a safe, calm and friendly place for those rough sleeping to experience a sense of family, time to reflect and support to move forward in their lives.

“This place is homely, and everyone made me feel welcome and people here go above and beyond to make you dreams come true and achieve where we need to be. When I arrived, I saw others getting a place and I thought would this ever be me … but it is me and I have a flat now.”

This Winter 2025-2026

We are hoping the shelter will be open from 3rd November 2025 through to 28th March 2026. The 5 months are split into 3 phases plus a Christmas phase.

The shelter aims to support 23 individuals over the winter period, offering a warm bed, meals, and tailored assistance to help them move on from rough sleeping. We continue to work with St Mungo’s and Bristol Hospitality Network as they refer guests to the shelter.

How you can help

Volunteers played a vital role in the running of the shelter. The volunteers do an awesome job, covering lunchtime and evening shifts, cooking meals and connecting with the guests. Their efforts always go beyond operational tasks, contributing to a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. Many guests expressed genuine appreciation for the time spent talking with volunteers.

Volunteers are needed for:

Lunchtime shifts (12-2pm).

Evening shifts (6:30pm – 10pm).

Cleaning team (Mondays 9am – 11am)

Cooks to make meals for the guests!

“It’s been clear from talking with the guests, that having a safe, warm place to stay while they took a breather, before looking for more permanent accommodation, has been of immense value to them, coupled with the support they’ve received from the staff and volunteers.”
